Blockout Roller Blinds
Made to Measure Blockout Blackout Roller Blinds
Window blockout roller blinds are designed for spaces where reducing light is a priority. The roller mechanism keeps the fabric positioned close to the window, helping limit light entry while maintaining the compact appearance associated with roller blinds.
They are often installed in bedrooms where early morning light needs to be reduced, nurseries and children’s rooms where consistent darkness helps support sleep, living rooms with televisions or projection screens, guest rooms where privacy and light control are important, and on doors or glazed panels where privacy is needed during the evening.
Because blockout roller blinds are made to measure, each blind is sized specifically for the window rather than adapted from standard dimensions. The cassette and channel system is produced to match the window width and drop, helping maintain smooth operation while improving light reduction across the glazing area.
How the Blockout System Reduces Light
Blackout fabrics prevent light passing through the material itself, but standard roller blinds often allow daylight to enter around the edges of the blind where the fabric meets the window frame.
The Blockout system reduces these gaps by guiding the blind within a cassette and side channel structure that sits close to the glazing.
Top cassette housing: The roller tube is enclosed within a cassette fitted above the window. This limits light entering above the blind, which is one of the most common gaps on standard roller blinds.
Side channels: Vertical aluminium channels run down both sides of the window, guiding the fabric as it moves up and down. This keeps the edges of the blind contained rather than leaving open gaps beside the fabric.
Brush-lined channel inserts: The inside of each channel contains a soft brush strip that lightly contacts the fabric edge as the blind moves. This helps block stray light entering between the fabric and the channel.
Because the fabric is guided within these channels rather than hanging freely, the blind remains aligned against the window as it moves, minimising gaps where light could enter.
Measuring for Blackout Roller Blinds
Accurate measuring helps ensure the blind covers the window effectively and performs as expected.
We recommend measuring in millimetres, measuring each window individually, checking whether a cassette is required for improved blackout performance, and considering any door handles or window hardware that may affect installation.
Our measuring guides explain the process step by step so you can confirm the correct width and drop before ordering. Free fabric samples also allow you to check colour and opacity in your own lighting conditions.
